Welcome to Comet The Comet organisation was set up by Takeover Radio Children's Media Trust in 2001 to act as a forum for new ideas, and to act as a support for organisations and individuals striving for increased media access for and by children of all ages. The many children involved in Takeover since 1996 have pioneered access to the airwaves for under 16s by using temporary licences on FM radio and then on the internet. Alongside this, campaigner Susan Stranks has championing the cause by constantly writing letters and arranging meetings with press, politicians and representatives of the BBC and other interested parties. Since 2002 Takeover Radio has been broadcasting on 103.2fm across Leicester with young people producing and presenting the programmes. Abracadabra has also been broadcasting on digital across London showcasing the work of young people.
The station has been running for 4 years full time on FM in Leicester and on the internet, there is a huge interest in children's broadcasting. There are many issues from how to involve and train kids, what to broadcast, how to find funding and what standards to apply. After much interest from schools radio groups across the country the Radio Academy, the support of our Patrons, Susan Stranks, and Gerry Anderson, it became clear that a National childrens media network is needed to promote, advance and represent the interests of children's broadcasting.

So what would you want from Comet? How do you think Children's Broadcasting should move forward in the next 5 years? We could act as a foum for new ideas, and support the aims and interests of those individuals and organisations striving for increased media access for and by children of all ages. We strongly belive for an organisation to be broadcasting to children they need to have children on the air and fundimentally involved with every aspect of the organisation. |
